DOWN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN I LAY

Abby rolled over to look at the clock through sleep eyes. Her blurred vision slowly cleared up so she could see the blue numbers in front of her. She finally made out 4:00. Shit, I'm late! Her head screamed at her. Abby jumped out of bed with an unstable balance. She almost fell over, but quickly caught herself on the nightstand. She threw herself in the shower before she could go back to sleep. Abby was a night creature. She always stayed up at the late hours of the night just because it gave her a rush. Sight was like her own drug. She felt invincible and powerful at night. That was part of the reason she took the job at the bar anyway. That way she could still have fun at night and not have to wake up the next morning to go to work. It was also a great way to hear about everything that is going on out on the streets of the great L.A. city.
By the time she got to the bar, Abby was already supposed to be behind the bar getting ready. Not that she had a lot to do, but at least tell someone that she was there. She pushed her way past a group of people, shoving and walking faster than she should have. She finally got to the back of the bar and told her boss she was there to start her shift. She got behind the bar and started serving the people sitting there. She was not what you could call a people person. She really kind of hated all of them. So, no this really wasn't the best job for her to have, but it was all she had and she had to find a way to pay for the bills. Her fake I.D. would do for now, but she wanted a better job. But this was one of the only jobs where she could work at night with minimal effort involved. Abby really didn't mind serving drinks to the people there drinking; she just wanted a nice tip out of it.
Abby looked out the window at the front of the bar. It was growing darker and she could feel a rush start. She loved staying up late and being around to see the interesting people that came out at night. Even if she hated people she had to admit that some did entertain her. She loved watching the drag queens walk the streets like they owned them, and she guessed in a way they did. They were fun to look at. Then there were the druggies that she saw on the sidewalk. They always looked so strung out and lost. Gone off to bigger and better places. Like wonderland. Oh how she wondered what it was like there. In the land of make believe and pretty colors. Oh how she wanted to fly. But she couldn't. Couldn't let herself get that way. It was risky business and not something she really wanted to fuck with. But it was a good idea in theory.
She went on thought out the night serving drinks and taking her tips. She still had plenty of energy and thought she could keep going for another couple of hours. Her break was soon and she was really anticipated it. Breaks were also nice. And she couldn't help but feel a little hungry in the pit of her stomach. She looked through the door and waited for her cousin to walk in. She had no clock to look at to tell what time it was, so she couldn't even tell weather or not if he was late. But she missed him. Abby hadn't seen him a quite some time. He was great company, she normally didn't like many people, but he was one of the few exceptions. Abby looked at the door every couple of minutes just waiting for him to walk in and save her with some sort of food.
