"Journal,
it's dark outside right now. i just got back from yet another recital. of course mother had to call every living relative in the state and invite them to this thing, as she does every month. my piano recitals are pretty much on the same day every single month, and have been for the past twelve years. shouldn't they already know when to come?
my recital was more disappointing than usual. today i skipped seventeen notes and played fourteen incorrectly. what makes my underachievement even worse is that it is a pretty easy piece to perform. i've performed it over six times and still can't seem to get it right. my piano instructor and all of the chatons north of the mexican border and south of oregon seemed to be pleased with me. mother said that there were a few talent scouts at the recital as well, but they wouldn't have wanted to give anyone as mediocre as i any attention.
after my performance mother decided to take us all out to ruth's chris "as a reward for burly's wonderful performance!" of course marie decided to ruin it all, claiming that she was planning on moving to new york as soon as she finished home-schooling. i can hear her being scolded by mother downstairs right now, i believe. my sister sings; she is more talented than i am. on occasion we do our warm-ups together and her soft, sweet soprano sounds like it belongs to an angel.
my piano instructor is taking me out to lunch tomorrow so we can discuss today's performance and its outcome. there was a pretty big audience and most of them weren't family, so i'd suppose that she is going to be pleased. well, at least i hope she is. she tries harder than i do, honestly.
tomorrow morning i've got to head out and read my article in the pasadena star, and that's going to be pretty exciting. there was a reporter snapping shots of me playing and it was pretty distracting. and then after the performance about three of them took me aside for a quick interview. i hope they didn't notice my mistakes.

history
elizabeth was morbidly infertile. she'd had two donors and eventually decided that she was going to go for another.
berlioz, or burly as his mother has nicknamed him, was the last born to elizabeth chaton. she was a classy, uptight, wealthy women with two older children who were already showing signs of becoming prodigies. marie, at the young age of three, had already begun taking voice lessons. and toulouse, toulouse could paint like nobody's business and he was only five. elizabeth had even larger expectations for her youngest child.
it was amazing how quickly berloiz picked up the piano. he would play, and play, and play and do nothing but play. elizabeth's grand piano in the foyer of their pasadena home hardly ever went unused. she had taught all of her children basic playing skills, but it seemed as if berloiz had been born with them. elizabeth hired a personal teacher for him and prayed that she might have something special.
berloiz was a serious child. he was quiet (and still is) and boring and quick to be a smartass. he was not the ideal piano student and would even make corrections to the tutor herself. before berloiz was eleven, elizabeth had hired six tutors. hardly any of them could handle his comments and what not until ms. blick came around. she was a big woman with a personality and about as much wit as berloiz. they got along quickly, and berloiz had a teacher.
by then, however, berloiz had been doing piano recitals for years. since the age of four he had been performing in little events and at family weddings. he would play for marie and marie would sing, and that is pretty much how it worked. they were all very close.
as berloiz grew, he began to get more and more famous in his pasadena community. people outside of the family began requesting him to perform for them and small venues wanted him to play. he'd attract perhaps one hundred people, which was impressive for a boy his age. berloiz's biggest recital (the one you may have read about in his journal above) had four hundred attendees, including talent scouts and reporters for the pasadena star. it's now evident to the boy that he could maybe become famous if he tried."
